Excuse Me, She Meant to Say: How to Activate
the 5 Neurological Responses Inherent in Any
Good Story
By Theresa Francomacaro
“I’m six years old, playing the narrator in the puppet show, “Goldilocks and The Three Bears.”
Chosen for that role by my first-grade teacher Mrs. Carpen because, in her words, I “had the
biggest mouth,” I recite the lines, “And she said… And he said…,” as Mama, Papa, Baby Bear,
and Goldilocks muddle through the story.”

Fast forward fifty years, and what I know for sure about stories is that the story must be for, and
in service to, the audience. Period. Full stop. End of story.
Everybody knows that the best stories show, don’t tell the audience what’s in it for them.
Memorable stories activate an emotional response which, if done correctly, can transport the
audience to another place.
That’s the power of story. That’s Why Story Works.
